 Australian Medical Council (AMC)

The Australian Medical Council is an independent national standards body whose purpose is to ensure that standards of education, training and assessment of the medical profession promote and protect the health of the Australian community.

As an IMG entering Australia you will follow on of the following pathways administered by the AMC dependant on your current qualification:

Standard Pathway

This pathway is for IMGs seeking general registration who are NOT eligible for the Competent Authority Pathway or the Specialist Pathway.

The two options for progression via the Standard Pathway are by AMC examinations OR workplace based assessments.

The AMC examination route is the most commonly followed and comprises of AMC CAT MCQ Examination and the AMC Clinical Examination.

Competent Authority Pathway

The Competent Authority Pathway (CAP) is intended for overseas trained non-specialists trained in an authority deemed competent by the Medical Board of Australia (MBA / AHPRA).

Successful entry via the CAP provides a quicker route to general registration without the need for examinations.

 Specialist Pathway

Intended for overseas trained specialists who have a primary qualification from a recognised training institution with the most common route to seek assessment of comparability to the standard of a specialist trained in in Australia.

Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

Implemented in 2010, AHPRA supports multiple national boards including the Medical Board of Australia (MBA).

The Medical Board of Australia registers medical practitioners and develops standards for the medical profession including accreditation standards and accredited courses.

When necessary the MBA investigates complaints about medical practitioners and conducts hearings and tribunals.

The MBA assesses international medical graduates who wish to practise in Australia.

Under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, there is a range of registration categories under which a doctor can practise medicine in Australia

Medical Colleges

The pathways and ongoing standard of speciality medicine are governed by the relevant specialist college.

Medicare

As a doctor working with the public health system in Australia you will work in conjunction with the Medicare system which is governed by the Australian Government Department of Human Services

Patients are entitled to a rebate for treatment from medical practitioners who have been issued a Medicare provider number and can also obtain free treatment in public hospitals.

Immigration and Citizenship

The final, non-clinical related aspect of a move to Australia is securing the appropriate work visa for you and your family.

Securing a work visa for Australia is a relatively straightforward process for doctors that meet the standard requirements.

The most common route of entry would be via a 482 visa, sponsored via your employed. A 482 visa provides security and allows your partner / dependants to work unrestricted for any employer.

Permanent Residency and Citizenship options are also available either as employer sponsored or via direct skill select entry.
